Pub Night, Wednesday, May 20th

Hope you've all had a chance to enjoy spring/early summer in London. Amidst all the turmoil around Obama's commencement speech at Notre Dame, I say we turn to the one thing we can all agree on...enjoying a beer at a great English Pub.  The pub this month is called the Island Queen, located just off of city road in Angel.  It's received rave reviews on all the websites I could find and should be a definite winner.  Amongst other things we plan to keep discuss our upcoming events at the club and would love your feedback/input/recommendations on any events you may be aware of in London this summer.

Pub Name: Island Queen
Location: Angel/Islington
When: Wednesday, May 20th
Time: 6:30/7:00 pm

Living in London: A Practical Guide

Looking for a great resource for someone moving to London OR maybe just for yourself?

The Junior League of London (JLL) publishes "Living in London:  A Practical Guide."  Now in its 10th edition, written by ex-pats for ex-pats, the book contains over 300 pages of practical insider information that a new Londoner needs in this extraordinary city:  moving, banking, taxation, post office, telephone and utilities, transportation, heathcare, children, schools, cooking, shopping, sports and leisure, cultural events and more.  It is a convenient resource to help answer new arrivals’ questions and needs.  No company or organisation pays to be referenced in the book; each recommendation is made by an ex-pat who has made the transition and discovered the resource.

The authors of this book, members of the JLL, are women who have relocated to London from various places in the world who seek to share with newcomers the brilliant qualities and experiences of their new life in London.

The JLL is a UK charity with the mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.  This book is one of the many ways the JLL raises money to fund its community programs in central London.

Because the book is major fundraiser, you can feel good knowing that all profits from your purchase will go to helping JLL’s work in London’s communities. What better reason to buy, so why not pick one up now?!

Each book costs £15 (plus postage & packing).

Click on the link below to order a copy.

London...seems a lot like last year?

We're going to "The Cardinal", a lovely older pub in Victoria on
Wednesday, January 21st at around 6:30 or 7:00. It's right behind
Westminster Cathedral, a great place to settle down for a few pints.
Feel free to bring friends, family, and other lovers of all things
Notre Dame.

Time: 6:30/7:00 pm

Thanksgiving Dinner with The American Society

From The American Society...

At the traditional American Thanksgiving Service at St. Paul’s Cathedral a few years ago, we looked around and wondered how many cold ovens without turkeys were left behind.

The next year, the chef at the Crosskeys Gastro Pub in Chelsea was very excited to prepare a special Thanksgiving set menu for us.  It was a three-course meal with all the trimmings for £27, and was really delicious.

Families, couples, and many people came along on their own.  It turned out to be a perfect way to celebrate, whether too busy to cook, or just looking for a chance to enjoy Thanksgiving without the work.

Time:   Dinner is at 7 o’clock,

Location: The Crosskeys Gastro Pub, 1 Lawrence Street, SW3 5NB.

Cost: £27.00 per person – 3 course meal  Children at £7.00 per child

All you need to do is telephone reservations in by Thursday, November 27, 2008

Phone  0207 349 9111.

http://www.thexkeys.co.uk

Please mention the American Society, and the staff will seat us together.  Last year we took over the entire place, and 30 people were turned away, so make your call now!

U.S. Ambassador Tuttle Invites All to Thanksgiving Day Service

The U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Robert H. Tuttle, would like to invite any interested Americans and their guests to a special Thanksgiving Day Service on November 27th at St. Paul's Cathedral.  The event is free to the public and is a unique way to begin the Thanksgiving Day Holiday.

The service begins at 11 a.m., though visitors should arrive to St. Paul’s no later than 10:30 a.m. and enter via the West end of the Cathedral.

Attached you will find the following two documents:  1) a letter from Ambassador Tuttle and 2) a flyer for the Thanksgiving Day Service.

Please feel free to let any other of your American friends or others know about the event as the seating capacity of St. Paul’s is quite large.

Wishing you a happy Thanksgiving,

Mark Lanning
Assistant Cultural Attaché

BC/ND Gamewatch Tonight at Sports Cafe

All,

We invite all ND fans, friends, and family members to come meet at the Sports Cafe Sat night at 1am to watch the ND/BC Game. The BC Club of London has been in contact with us and will also be at the Sports Cafe, so we're planning a peaceful sharing of the venue with their club. You'll probably recognise most of their faces from other visits to the Sports Cafe...they are the ones that wear Notre Dame shirts every Saturday except this one. The Sports Cafe has assured us that they'll show the game and stay open to the bitter end(hopefully not as long as last weekend's game). There are some other big games and a boxing match on Saturday night, so we are going to aim to get there at 12:30 or so to get a good location.

Look forward to seeing you all there, give me a call if you have any questions. Go Irish.

For those of you who have not been to the illustrious Sports Cafe before, it's at 80 Haymarket SW1Y 4TE
